People receiving social assistance may be referred to a five-week workshop, offered by the County of Lambton Ontario Works Department, that upon completion allows them to become eligible to participate in Circles. These workshops include the completion of Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By World, a step-by-step, life planning workbook for people in poverty. It brings together Dr. Ruby Payne's work on the hidden rules of class and the knowledge of participants living in poverty.

The Circle Leader has three primary goals:

  1. Create life changes that lead to permanent self-sufficiency
  2. Develop unique gifts and leadership skills to lead the circle, contribute to the Circles ™ initiative, and give back to the community
  3. Use experience of poverty and leading their family to self-sufficiency to advocate within the community for changes in the systems barriers that keep poverty in place
